How does polyvinyl alcohol dissolve?

1. Polyvinyl alcohol is soluble in water and generally needs to be heated to 65~75℃ in order to dissolve completely. Slightly soluble in dimethyl sulfoxide. It is soluble in glycerol at 120~150℃, but becomes jelly when cooled to room temperature.

2. To dissolve polyvinyl alcohol, the material should be added to room temperature water under stirring. Disperse evenly and then heat up to accelerate the dissolution, which can prevent caking and affect the dissolution speed. The polyvinyl alcohol aqueous solution (5%) is very sensitive to borax and boric acid, which is easy to cause gelation. When the borax reaches 1% of the solution mass, irreversible gelation will occur.

3. Chromate, dichromate and permanganate can also make polyvinyl alcohol gel. The viscosity of PVA 17-88 aqueous solution increases gradually with time at room temperature. But the viscosity when the concentration is 8% is absolutely stable and has nothing to do with time. The special phenomenon c PVA has good film-forming properties and is highly unpleasant to many gases except water vapor and ammonia.

4. Good light resistance, not affected by light. It can burn in open fire and has a special smell. Aqueous solutions sometimes become toxic when stored. Non-toxic and non-irritating to human skin.
